bucca展に出品します
I am taking part of the group exhibition “bucca”. Each participating artist create his or her own book cover.
My book cover is based on Yasutaka Tsutsui’s “Yumenokizaka Bunkiten”.
The story is hard to explain. It belongs to so called “parallel universe” genre, I suppose. The main character wakes up as “Shigenori Obata” then goes to work, and on the way to the business meeting, he shortly falls asleep. Then he wakes up as “Shigenori Ohata”. In the building he arrived for the meeting, he finds a poster that notifies talk event of “Tsuneaki Omura”, which is also his other self. The whole structure seems bizarre, but when we think of the moment of making a decision, it might make sense. By choosing one option, we choose to dispose other options. It is symbolized in the geographical characteristics of this novel. At Yumenokizaka station the train which came from central city leaves to 4 different destinations.
I was watching this TV program on one day introducing “imaginary maps”. The concept is crazy enough, but at one point the creator started to explain about a bizarre blank space. It was originally going to be a bullet train station. But the (imaginary) plan was demolished and now the site is used as a park.
Watching the program, I thought, map is not 2 dimensional. In the sense that it suggests the “could have been future” and remain of the past, it is 4dimensional. And challenging the idea of 3dimension is precisely the theme of this novel.
出展作家がそれぞれオリジナルのブックカバーを作るグループ展、「bucca展」にアーティストの竹内徳子さんからお誘いをいただき、参加させていただくことになりました。
筒井康隆の『夢の木坂分岐点』をテーマに、地図をレーザーカットで作成しました。
『夢の木坂分岐点』はストーリーの説明が難しい話なのですが、ジャンル分けすると「パラレル物」ということになるのでしょうか。主人公は小畑重則として目覚め、出社してから打ち合わせに向かうタクシーの中でのまどろみから覚めると大畑重則であり、打ち合わせ先の会社に貼ってある講演の告知に登場する大村常昭も、自分であるという、、さまざまな人生の選択肢の中で、ある人はサラリーマンであり、ある人は作家志望でありながらまだ踏ん切りがつかず、ある人は成功した作家であり、ある人は文学賞を受賞して退社したものの収入が途絶えて汲々としている、といったさまざまなバリエーションが示されます。人生の岐路、選択肢の多様さに迷う様子が「夢の木坂駅」から4つの線路に分岐したさまざまな行き先に住んでいる主人公たちという、地理的・物理的なメタファーで示されているのです。
ということで、本を読み、それぞれの人物の住所の地理的情報、夢の木坂駅付近の様子などを読み解きつつ、どの「人生」でも主人公が探し求める「夢の木」を具体化しました。以前タモリ倶楽部で「架空の街の地図を作る人たち」というのがすごくて、そんな感じを目指したのですが精度が低くて残念です。その架空地図の中に、新幹線駅を誘致するはずだったのだけど駅は別の場所にできてしまって、空き地を緑地として利用しているために奇妙な空間になっているという場所がありました（その設定の細かさがもうすごいですよね）。それを聞いて、ああ地図って「なれたかもしれない未来」の残骸や、忘れられた過去の痕跡を持っているという点で、本当に多次元的というか、パラレルユニバースの切断面のようであるなと感じたのでした。
レーザーカットは東京紙器さんにお願いしました。
サイトに掲載されているデータの作り方の情報が懇切丁寧で、初めてでも戸惑いなく進めることができました。悪い癖でillustratorでデータを作っているとスケール感がわからなくてどんどん細かくなってしまい、レーザーの幅0.25mmが大変な障害に感じられたのですが、実際に上がりを見るとここまで細かく出せるのか、と感心してしまいました。
